Where you’ll work…

You’ll be based out of one off the 13 branches that offers programs ranging from health and wellness, to family programs, to child care, to aquatics (access is a staff benefit - swim a few laps before work, take a yoga class, do some laps on the track before you go home, if you like!). SpecificallytheSeattle Y offers Programsthroughout the greater Seattle area. The programs are located in Seattle Schools using classrooms, multipurpose rooms, gyms, outdoor spaces and take several field trips throughout the summer.

What you’ll be doing…

As a Y-Scholars tutor you will be providing academic assistance and mentoring to students in our African-American college readiness program at Garfield High School. Working with the Y-Scholars directors and volunteers you will be assisting students students during after school study sessions.

Principle Activities:

  • Along with Y-Scholars staff and teachers, tutors will provide academic assistance in afterschool setting for assigned grade levels.

  • Preparing classrooms for daily activities and collaborating with academic teachers and teacher’s assistants to ensure that objectives are reached.

  • Adhering to all YMCA and school district professional expectations and compliance issues.

  • Creating a positive, achievement-oriented, organized and engaging learning environment.

  • Communicates with, develops, and maintains positive relationships with youth and families.

You have a track record of being able todevelop and implement quality programming and know how to provide support and a sense of belonging to others.


You should be 18 years of age and have:

  1. Current state approved first-aid certification.
    1. Current state approved community CPR certification.
    1. Experience in working with youth the same age as those to be supervised.
  1. One year of experience or more in program planning preferred.

  2. Knowledge of culturally relevant and developmentally appropriate practices.

  3. Knowledge of Seattle School District Academic Learning Standards for the age group and designated subject area.

  4. Knowledge of core curriculum components of assigned school.
