Job Summary

Every day hundreds of children participate in fun and engaging YMCA summer day camp programs.The Day Camp Counselor serves as a professional role model for our campers by leading through example and guiding campers through recreational activities that teach life skills, encourage healthy and safe behaviors and create a positive camper experience. Recreational activities with campers, include but are not limited to, arts and crafts, sports, social recreation, songs, nature hikes, archery, and other games and enrichment activities.

Day Camp season runs June 22nd - August 28th (start dates vary by location) with trainings for some positions beginning in early May/June. Shifts range from 6:45am - 6:15pm. Day camp program sites are located throughout the community surrounding our branches at local schools and parks.

Responsibilities

  1. Provides supervision, guidance, leadership and direction to Camp Counselors as needed.

  2. Supervises a group of children to ensure their health, safety and to provide a positive experience for each camper.

  3. Plans and implements program activities.

  4. Professionally engages with parents/guardians to provide pertinent program information and share about their camper’s experience.

  5. Follows YMCA policies and procedures, including those related to medical and disciplinary situations, child abuse prevention and emergency procedures.

  6. Ensures that equipment is clean, safe, set up and stored properly.

  7. Attends staff meetings and training programs as required.

  8. Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  1. 21 years of age or older

  2. 1-2 years of experience with children; camps, child care, tutoring, nanny, coaching

  3. 1 year + experience leading others as a lead or supervisor

  4. Demonstrated experience planning and implementing group activities

  5. Other applicable education, training, and experience, which provide the knowledge, abilities, and skills necessary to perform effectively in the position will be considered.

  6. Ability to model and demonstrate Y values; caring, respect, responsibility and honest

  7. Prefer knowledge of, and previous experience with, diverse populations (language, culture, race, physical ability, sexual orientation, etc.). Ability to speak any language in addition to English may be helpful.

  8. Immunization records

  9. Current TB test by the Mantoux method.

  • Within 14 days of assuming camp duties

If position requires driving:

  • Current Driver’s License with a minimum 3 years safe driving experience and a driving record which meets or exceeds YMCA standards

  • Maximum one minor violation

  • No speeding violation of more than 20 mph over the limit
