Tell me about this job!
Coordinates in-field aspects of winter wilderness based programming from January 4th through March 19th, 2022. This includes all trip logistics and the physical and emotional safety of up to 10 participants, while engaging them in activities such as backpacking, rock climbing, and mountaineering.
This is an Authorized Driver position, read more in the Position Requirements.
Compensation for this position is currently under review; Camping & Outdoor Leadership salary rates will increase once the Y's 2022 budgeting process is complete.
About BOLD & GOLD
The BOLD (Boys Outdoor Leadership Development) & GOLD (Girls Outdoor Leadership Development) Program is dedicated to inspiring courage and confidence in diverse groups middle and high school aged participants through outdoor adventures. We engage over 500 youth on outdoor experiences ranging in length from 5 to 15 days in places like the North Cascades, Mt Rainier, and Olympic National Park. Activities include backpacking, rock climbing, mountaineering, fishing, yoga, art, music, literature, backcountry cooking, and having fun in nature.
Our goal is to increase confidence, courage, emotional intelligence, wonder, and community awareness in participants. We believe these traits are the foundations of leadership and work to inspire participants to develop their own leadership style. We prepare young people, from middle school on, to return to their communities as leaders through multicultural experiential education in the natural world. What you'll be doing
- Facilitate the learning of outdoor skills during our 5-15 day wilderness-based hiking, paddling, backpacking, climbing, or mountaineering trips. 2. Ensure both a physically and an emotionally safe environment.3. Create values-forming experiences for adolescents.4. Create an inclusive environment for youth in the outdoors.5. Liaise with teacher/adult chaperones from partner organizations.6. Other duties as assigned.

BOLD & GOLD is based out of the Cascade People’s Center (CPC), located in Seattle, WA. BOLD & GOLD courses begin and end at the CPC. BOLD & GOLD programming takes place in remote wilderness locations (national park, national forest, state park land) across Washington State.
Employees must be able to lift and carry items weighing up to 50lbs, safely travel over varied terrain (trails, tree roots, boulder/rock fields, shoreline, mud, snow, ice) up to 15 miles per day, be comfortable spending multiple days and/or weeks in a wilderness setting, communicate both verbally and non-verbally with other staff, volunteers, and participants. POSITION TYPE/EXPECTED HOURS OF WORK
Winter season runs from January 4 - March 19, 2022 with 1-2 days of work per week. Instructors can expect to be out in the field Occasionally Friday, most Saturdays and occassionaly on Sunday.
BOLD & GOLD Employees must be able to commute to the Cascade People’s center (located at 309 Pontius Ave N, Seattle, WA 98109). Parking is not available onsite, but there is public parking located around the building. The area is serviced by several public bus routes. All travel required for work will be done in YMCA vehicles by YMCA Authorized Drivers.
What we're looking for in an applicant
Two years of experience or more working with teens in an organized setting, including facilitating activities addressing issues facing adolescents.
Professional instructional experience in backpacking, rock climbing, kayaking, and/or mountaineering.
Experience in program planning and administration.
Ability to plan, implement, and oversee a variety of wilderness-based program activities.
Knowledge of developmental needs of teens; demonstrates an understanding of the needs of teens and the ability to evaluate their needs individually.
Excellent judgment and decision-making skills
Strong group facilitation, communication, and conflict resolution skills
Experience facilitating activities addressing issues facing adolescents
Experience making the transference of a wilderness experience relevant to the everyday lives of underserved youth
Personal or professional experience in backpacking, rock climbing, paddling, and/or mountaineering
Knows how to have fun!
This position requires driving :
21 years of age or older.
Current Driver’s License with a minimum 3 years safe driving experience and a driving record which meets or exceeds YMCA standards
Other applicable education, training, and experience, which provide the knowledge, abilities, and skills necessary to perform effectively in the position will be considered.
Maximum one minor violation
No speeding violation of more than 20mph over the limit

Current W-EMT, WFR, or WFA, and CPR
WA State Food Handlers Permit
Prefer knowledge of and previous experience with, diverse populations (language, culture, race, physical ability, sexual orientation, etc.). Ability to speak any language in addition to English may be helpful.
Experience with anti-racism practices.
