Tell me about this job!

This person is responsible for assisting in the management of the logistical systems that support our wilderness-based expeditions. The Logistics Manager works closely with the Operations Supervisor and Course Directors to ensure that instructors and participants are provided with the necessary resources to be successful and comfortable while on trip. Responsibilities include overseeing food, equipment, and transportation for the summer season.

This is an Authorized Driver position, read more in the Position Requirements.

Compensation for this position is currently under review; Camping & Outdoor Leadership salary rates will increase once the Y's 2022 budgeting process is complete.

About BOLD & GOLD

The BOLD (Boys Outdoor Leadership Development) & GOLD (Girls Outdoor Leadership Development) Program is dedicated to inspiring courage and confidence in diverse groups middle and high school aged participants through outdoor adventures. We engage over 500 youth on outdoor experiences ranging in length from 5 to 15 days in places like the North Cascades, Mt Rainier, and Olympic National Park. Activities include backpacking, rock climbing, mountaineering, fishing, yoga, art, music, literature, backcountry cooking, and having fun in nature.

Our goal is to increase confidence, courage, emotional intelligence, wonder, and community awareness in participants. We believe these traits are the foundations of leadership and work to inspire participants to develop their own leadership style. We prepare young people, from middle school on, to return to their communities as leaders through multicultural experiential education in the natural world. Responsibilities

What you'll be doing

  1. Ensure safety, quality, and organization of all logistical systems.

  2. Managing the organization, function, and availability of all program equipment, including backpacking, camping, rock climbing and mountaineering technical equipment, clothing, etc.

  3. Planning, purchasing, and organizing field appropriate and culturally appropriate meals.

  4. Manage a team of 4-6 Logistics Coordinators who will aid in the delivery of the summer program.

  5. Collaborating with staff to pack and prepare all field-going food and equipment.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

BOLD & GOLD is based out of the Cascade People’s Center (CPC), located in Seattle, WA. BOLD & GOLD courses begin and end at the CPC. BOLD & GOLD programming takes place in remote wilderness locations (national park, national forest, state park land) across Washington State.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Employees must be able to lift and carry items weighing up to 50lbs, safely travel over varied terrain (trails, tree roots, boulder/rock fields, shoreline, mud, snow, ice) up to 15 miles per day, be comfortable spending multiple days and/or weeks in a wilderness setting, communicate both verbally and non-verbally with other staff, volunteers, and participants. POSITION TYPE/EXPECTED HOURS OF WORK

Anticipated Work Dates:

June 1 – September 6th, 2022

40-50 hours per week – five days on, two off.

TRAVEL

BOLD & GOLD Employees must be able to commute to the Cascade People’s center (located at 309 Pontius Ave N, Seattle, WA 98109). Parking is not available onsite, but there is public parking located around the building. The area is serviced by several public bus routes. All travel required for work will be done in YMCA vehicles by YMCA Authorized Drivers.

Qualifications

What we're looking for in an applicant

  1. Minimum of 1 season managing of Wilderness Trip logistics

  2. Experience working with outdoor equipment, including repair and maintenance

  3. Experience planning and packing backcountry food for parties of ten or more

  4. Excellent organizational and time management skills

  5. Ability to work independently as well as within a team

  6. Commitment to working with youth

  7. Commitment to working with diverse groups

  8. Ability to manage a strong cohesive team

  9. Ability to create an inclusive environment

  10. Strong communication skills (both written and verbal and administrative skills, including experience using MS Word and Excel

  11. Knows how to have fun!

  12. This position requires driving :

  13. 21 years of age or older.

  14. Current Driver’s License with a minimum 3 years safe driving experience and a driving record which meets or exceeds YMCA standards

  15. Other applicable education, training, and experience, which provide the knowledge, abilities, and skills necessary to perform effectively in the position will be considered.

  16. Maximum one minor violation

  17. No speeding violation of more than 20mph over the limit

Preferred Education/Experience

  1. Current W-EMT, WFR, or WFA, and CPR

  2. WA State Food Handlers Permit

  3. Prefer knowledge of and previous experience with, diverse populations (language, culture, race, physical ability, sexual orientation, etc.). Ability to speak any language in addition to English may be helpful.

  4. Experience with anti-racism practices.
