Job Summary

Coordinates in-field aspects of wilderness based programming. This includes all trip logistics and the physical and emotional safety of up to 10 participants, while engaging them in activities such as rock climbing, and mountaineering. Climbing instructors may also lead other programming for BOLD & GOLD, including backpacking, hiking, and paddling.

Wilderness Instructor - Climbing will be responsible for setting up routes, teaching climbing skills, and ensuring the emotional and physical safety of participants during their programs.

Compensation for this position is currently under review; Camping & Outdoor Leadership salary rates will increase once the Y's 2022 budgeting process is complete.

About BOLD & GOLD

The BOLD (Boys Outdoor Leadership Development) & GOLD (Girls Outdoor Leadership Development) Program is dedicated to inspiring courage and confidence in diverse groups middle and high school aged participants through outdoor adventures. We engage over 500 youth on outdoor experiences ranging in length from 5 to 15 days in places like the North Cascades, Mt Rainier, and Olympic National Park. Activities include backpacking, rock climbing, mountaineering, fishing, yoga, art, music, literature, backcountry cooking, and having fun in nature.

Our goal is to increase confidence, courage, emotional intelligence, wonder, and community awareness in participants. We believe these traits are the foundations of leadership and work to inspire participants to develop their own leadership style. WORK ENVIRONMENT

BOLD & GOLD is based out of the Cascade People’s Center (CPC), located in Seattle, WA. BOLD & GOLD courses begin and end at the CPC. BOLD & GOLD programming takes place in remote wilderness locations (national park, national forest, state park land) across Washington State.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Employees must be able to lift and carry items weighing up to 50lbs, safely travel over varied terrain (trails, tree roots, boulder/rock fields, shoreline, mud, snow, ice) up to 15 miles per day, be comfortable spending multiple days and/or weeks in a wilderness setting, communicate both verbally and non-verbally with other staff, volunteers, and participants. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

POSITION TYPE/EXPECTED HOURS OF WORK

Training for 2022 begins in mid-June, and instructors can expect to have three to five field-weeks of work (usually about 35 – 55 working days) between the end of June and the beginning of September.

Instructors must be available for training in the Seattle area before their first day of work.

TRAVEL

BOLD & GOLD Employees must be able to commute to the Cascade People’s center (located at 309 Pontius Ave N, Seattle, WA 98109). Parking is not available onsite, but there is public parking located around the building. The area is serviced by several public bus routes. All travel required for work will be done in YMCA vehicles by YMCA Authorized Drivers.

Qualifications

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

  1. Minimum 20 years of age or older.

  2. Two years of experience or more working with teens in an organized setting, including facilitating activities addressing issues facing adolescents.

  3. Professional instructional experience in backpacking, rock climbing, kayaking, and/or mountaineering.

  4. Experience in program planning and administration.

  5. Ability to plan, implement, and oversee a variety of wilderness-based program activities.

  6. Knowledge of developmental needs of teens; demonstrates an understanding of the needs of teens and the ability to evaluate their needs individually.

  7. Current W-EMT, WFR, or WFA and CPR

  8. Current WA State Food Handlers Permit

  9. Instructors must be available for training in the Seattle area in early June

  10. For Wilderness Instructor – Climbing:

  11. Be able to climb a variety of terrain and teach and role model movement techniques for that type of climb

  12. Have experience and knowledge of using specialized climbing gear

  13. Be able to effectively build anchors using gear and/or natural features

  14. Select, prepare, and manage top rope sites that are suitable for participants

  15. Effectively manage a belay and be able to recognize and correct participant errors in belaying, climbing, and rope skills

This position requires driving :

  • 21 years of age or older.

  • Current Driver’s License with a minimum 3 years safe driving experience and a driving record which meets or exceeds YMCA standards

  • Other applicable education, training, and experience, which provide the knowledge, abilities, and skills necessary to perform effectively in the position will be considered.

  • Maximum one minor violation

  • No speeding violation of more than 20mph over the limit

PREFERRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  1. Minimum 21 years old

  2. Current Driver’s License with a minimum of 3 years safe driving experience and a driving record which meets or exceeds YMCA standards.

  3. Maximum of one minor violation.

  4. Must pass YMCA pre-employment drug screening.

  5. Prefer knowledge of and previous experience with diverse populations (language, culture, race, physical ability, sexual orientation, etc.).Experience making wilderness experiences relevant to the everyday lives of underserved youth.

  6. Ability to speak any language in addition to English
