Thank you for your interest in working for the YMCA and our Aquatics positions. The Aquatics staff of the YMCA of Greater Seattle provide quality water activities and programs with a focus on providing a safe and fun environment for all of our members. The YMCA aquatics staff help supervise and manage the operations of our aquatics center programs ranging from health and wellbeing group classes, open swim, swim lessons, and swim team to name a few. Being a part of our aquatics staff requires a love for swimming and water activities, as well as the ability to relate with people of all backgrounds. At the Y we teach more than swim strokes, we develop a love for physical fitness through water activities.

Maintain safe swimming conditions in the pool, on deck and surrounding areas. Prevents accidents by maintaining constant observation of the pool area, enforcing health and safety rules and maintaining emergency readiness.
Instructs swimming lessons/programs as assigned in accordance with YMCA guidelines.
Conveys basic information on YMCA programs and schedules to members and, as appropriate, refers members to other YMCA Total Health programs and/or staff.
Develops positive relationships with participants and parents.
Attends staff meetings and trainings as required.
Knows/reviews all emergency procedures and responds to emergency situations immediately in accordance with YMCA policies, procedures, and the “safe-in-six” model. Completes related reports as required.
Follows all YMCA policies, rules, regulations and procedures, including emergency and safety procedures. Responds to emergency situations as needed. Completes incident and accident reports as necessary.
Performs equipment checks and ensures appropriate equipment is available as needed.
Completes incident and accident reports as necessary.
Performs routine maintenance of the pool and surrounding areas to ensure cleanliness.
Checks pool and rescue equipment and promptly reports any problems.
Maintains aquatic program areas and equipment with a high attention to cleanliness and safety.
Other duties as assigned.
Age requirements and qualifications vary by position.
Minimum qualifications of entry level jobs include:
16 or 18 years of age or older. (depends on position)
Current state approved first-aid certification
- Current state approved CPR certification, Pro or Basic Life Support.
- Lifeguard certification – YMCA or Red Cross.
- Ability to maintain certification-level of physical and mental readiness.
Must be observant and able to react calmly, quickly and with good judgment in an emergency.
Demonstrated ability to assist children and others in the development of swimming skills
Ability to lift equipment, and to lift a small to average size child
Ability to teach skills to others
Prefer knowledge of, and previous experience with, diverse populations (language, culture, race, physical ability, sexual orientation, etc.). Ability to speak any language in addition to English may be helpful.
You will be required to complete a swim competency test.
