YMCA of Greater Seattle Outdoor, Leadership and Environmental Education Program Supervisor in Sammamish, Washington

Overview

Job Summary

Provides day-to-day supervision, leadership, facilitation and management of Environmental Education, Outdoor Recreation, and Teen Leadership Programs including Earth Service Corps, Leadership Boards and Youth and Family Recreation Programs. This person will co-instruct Summer Teen Camp: Expedition Mountain to Sound; facilitate wilderness skills including climbing, hiking, paddling, biking, and backpacking; teach environmental education classes for High School and Middle School students at day camps in the fall and spring; instruct family and teen outdoor workshops and experiences; co-instruct service projects with our community partners; and implement programs that integrate service learning.

Plans and implements safe, high quality and enriching programs through working directly with employees, volunteers, and program participants. Ability to work evenings/weekends on a regular basis required. You will be the lead for communicating with program participants and parents/guardians, community schools and partners, vendors, managing supplies, and marketing the program inside the branch and at off-site locations.

Responsibilities

  1. Ensures planning and implementation of culturally relevant and developmentally appropriate activities in accordance with the Youth Development goals of the YMCA. Is responsible for the quality and completion of all program plans, including lesson, behavior and event plans.

  2. Hires, trains, supervises and evaluates Counselors/volunteers. Assists in conducting staff meetings and organizing trainings.

  3. Professionally engages with parents/guardians to provide pertinent information about their child’s experience and to promote upcoming programs.

  4. Follows YMCA policies and procedures, including those related to medical and disciplinary situations, child abuse prevention and emergency procedures.

  5. Provides direct supervision to a group of children.

  6. May maintain required records according to YMCA standards, including attendance records, registration information, accident reports and discipline records.

  7. Recruits new enrollments.

  8. Ensures that site supplies are maintained and purchased as necessary.

  9. May assist with developing and monitoring department budgets.

  10. Encourages member involvement, identifies potential volunteers and assists with the Annual Campaign.

  11. Attends staff meetings and trainings as required.

  12. Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  1. 21 years of age or older.

  2. High school graduate or equivalent.

  3. Three+ years of experience working with youth. Work with teens preferred.

  4. One year or more of supervisory experience.

  5. Strong customer service skills, responding to multiple questions via phone, email and in person. Ability to problem solve and resolve conflict.

  6. Strong computer skills and experience working with word processing, spreadsheet and database software.

  7. Knowledge of standard office equipment, such as fax machines, copiers and phone systems.

  8. Current state approved first-aid certification.

    1. Current state approved infant/child (or community if school aged) CPR certification.** At hire, or earliest possible training (but no later than 90 days after employment).

PREFERRED POSITION ATTRIBUTES AND SKILLS

  • Strong knowledge of Puget Sound area

  • Wilderness First Aidcertification or Wilderness First Responder certification

  • College degree

  • Knowledge of, and previous experience with, diverse populations (language, culture, race, physical ability, sexual orientation, etc.).

  • Ability to speak any language in addition to English may be helpful.
