Job Summary

The Waterfront Director provides direct supervision and oversight to overall operation of waterfront area - including activities, scheduling, supervision of lifeguard counselors, and equipment inspection and upkeep. Ensures the supervision and safety of campers at all times.

Responsibilities

  1. Maintains the Waterfront areas.

  2. Maintains Safety equipment (lifejackets, rescue boats, first aid kits, etc.).

  3. Ensures proper maintenance of small craft and program equipment.

  4. If applicable, Directs and coordinates the Community Swim Program which includes but is not limited to Youth Swim Lessons, Day Camp Open Swim, and Family Swim activities.

  5. Facilitates program activities that are developmentally appropriate and which promote camper skill and character development. Leads and assists with facilitation of all waterfront clinics and other all-camp special events.

  6. Maintains proper ratio of 1 lifeguard for 25 campers and 1 staff person for every 10 campers.

  7. Maintains safety and cleanliness standards including pool chemicals, if applicable.

  8. Takes special note of individual camper health needs or concerns on a daily basis.

  9. Communicates personal or staff needs to supervisor in a timely manner.

  10. Attends staff meetings and trainings.

  11. Maintains waterfront schedule.

  12. Schedules and facilitates emergency waterfront drills.

  13. Follows YMCA policies and procedures, including those related to medical and disciplinary situations, child abuse prevention and emergencies.

  14. Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  1. 21 years of age or older.

  2. Water Safety Instructor or YMCA Progressive Swim Instructor certification, Camp Orkila only.

  3. Current state approved first aid certification.

  4. Current state approved CPR certification.

  5. First Aid/CPR for the professional rescuer.

  6. One or more years of college preferred.

  7. Two or more years experience in waterfront experience.

  8. Current Lifeguard certification.

  9. Ability to participate in activities that involve rigorous activity in an outdoor setting, including, but not limited to hiking, boating, camping and swimming.

  10. Prefer knowledge of, and previous experience with, diverse populations (language, culture, race, physical ability, sexual orientation, etc.). Ability to speak any language in addition to English may be helpful.
