YMCA of Greater Seattle Director of Environmental Education - Interim in Longbranch, Washington

The Interim Director of Environmental Education directs the program development of the assigned program area(s) at Camp Colman in Longbranch, WA. This position is responsible for ensuring continuity of program and services while providing oversight and development to program staff. The Director lives on the beautiful Key Peninsula at Camp Colman, and housing is provided.

The Interim Director of Environmental Education position is temporary and the starting date is as soon as possible .

The Interim Director is a member of the Colman management team and works with other on-site managers to ensure the successful operation of all camp programming. This position reports to the Executive Director and they work together in school planning, departmental budgeting, and school recruitment.


  1. Communicating with school personnel to schedule and confirm reservations

  2. Recruits and hires fall Outdoor Environmental Educators

  3. Develops staff training plan

  4. Develops program and safety plan for fall 2021

  5. Develops and maintains collaborative relationships with community organizations, schools and agencies related to assigned programs.

  6. Develops, produces and distributes program information necessary to promote assigned programs, in accordance with branch marketing plans.

  7. Provides support to weekend family camp programs in collaboration with Senior Program Director

  8. Ensures that safety procedures are followed and that all programs are in compliance with YMCA standards, all relevant regulations and other applicable standards.

  9. Ensures high quality programs through innovative program development evaluations and ongoing training of staff.

  10. Ensures upkeep of related facilities and equipment.

  11. Ensures smooth transition of Outdoor Environmental Education program during Camp Colman leadership transition

  12. Additional responsibilities include; maintaining current partnerships within the local community, high level management of both the Garden and Marine Center.


  1. Bachelor's degree in relevant program areaor equivalent education/experience. Other applicable education, training, and experience, which provide the knowledge, abilities, and skills necessary to perform effectively in the position will be considered.

  2. Two years or more of related experience, with proven experience in training others.

  3. One or more years of experience with staff and volunteer supervision, program development, budget management.

  4. Ability to demonstrate strong organizational and management skills.

  5. Experience and knowledge with youth behavior management and child abuse prevention.

  6. Intermediate computer skills and experience with Microsoft Office suit (Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, Outlook).

  7. Ability to visit sites and community organizations.

  8. Experience and demonstrated ability in year-round camp programming and operation.

  9. Knowledge of American Camping Association guidelines.

Preferred qualifications

  • Familiarity with Camp Colman and the Outdoor Environmental Education (OEE) program.

  • Interest in Outdoor Environmental Education.

  • Experience in BEETLES and SEL curriculum.

  • High level of cultural competency to ensure quality and culturally appropriate programs are delivered to the diverse groups that attend to Camp Orkila.

  • Prefer knowledge of, and previous experience with, diverse populations (language, culture, race, physical activity, sexual orientation, etc.). Ability to speak any language in addition to English may be helpful.
