Job Summary

Unit Directors are responsible for one unit, which includes 20 to 40 campers and four to eight Cabin Counselors. Units are of a specific age group and mixed in gender identity. Unit Directors are responsible for creating a weekly schedule and facilitating activities, managing camper behavior, mentoring, coaching, and providing feedback for counselors, interns, and counselors-in-training. Unit Directors may also be asked to communicate with parents and guardians as necessary. Previous experience in coaching, teaching, or managing others in a professional setting is strongly preferred. Wilderness First Aid (WFA) certification may be required depending on the unit. We offer a complimentary WFA course two days before staff training begins. Unit Directors are supervised by an Assistant Director and perform other duties as assigned.

Responsibilities

  1. Supervises a group of staff and campers. Ensures that all staff are accounting for campers and safety at all times.

  2. Plans, schedules, and facilitates program activities that are developmentally appropriate and which promote camper skill and character development. Organizes, leads, and assists with facilitation of all-camp special events.

  3. Provides leadership and supervision to any developing teen leaders placed with the group.

  4. Maintains safety and cleanliness standards. Takes special note of individual camper/staff health needs or concerns on a daily basis. Shares cleaning duties with fellow staff.

  5. Ensures that counselors are planning and organizing cabin activities as well as participating in daily scheduled activities.

  6. Communicates personal or camper/staff needs to supervisor in a timely manner.

  7. Conducts four verbal and two written evaluations of unit staff over course of summer.

  8. Maintains equipment in sound and safe order.

  9. Attends directors meeting and trainings.

  10. Follows YMCA policies and procedures, including those related to medical and disciplinary situations, child abuse prevention and emergencies.

  11. Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  1. 20 years of age or older.

  2. Current state approved first aid certification.

  3. Current state approved CPR certification.

  4. High school graduate or equivalent.

  5. One or more years of college preferred. Other applicable education, training, and experience, which provide the knowledge, abilities, and skills necessary to perform effectively in the position will be considered.

  6. Ability to participate in activities that involve rigorous physical activity in an outdoor setting, including, but not limited to hiking, boating, camping and swimming.

  7. Prefer knowledge of, and previous experience with, diverse populations (language, culture, race, physical ability, sexual orientation, etc.). Ability to speak any language in addition to English may be helpful.
