Job Summary

Camp Orkila's Teen Expedition Program doesn't run without the hard work of its Assistant Director Team. Working in Tandem with the Program Director, the Assistant Director team helps to oversee the day to day operation of the Expedition Program, work to supervise and support the team of sea kayaking, sailing and bike touring trip leaders, work with them to develop and improve programming and curriculum and play a large role in facilitating training and establishing the feel of the community.

The Assistant Director team share responsibilities across Orkila’s two different types of expedition courses working to support the Leadership Development Program and Orkila’s pure Expedition courses. The Assistant Director team will also be trained to drive Orkila vehicles and trailers and help transport courses in and out of the field. The Teen Expedition Assistant Directors are supervised by the Teen Expedition Director and may perform other duties as assigned.

  1. Supervises and develops staff, program areas and campers as assigned.

  2. Increases camper and staff awareness of the 4 core values: respect, responsibility, caring, and honesty through camp programs and modeling of behavior.

  3. Enforces safety and health regulations and follows emergency procedures as outlined.

  4. Follows YMCA policies and procedures, including those related to medical and disciplinary situations, child abuse prevention and emergencies.

  5. Informs Summer Camp Director of ethical considerations, issues or potential parental concerns that affect the experience of Orkila campers or staff.

  6. Assists Summer Program Directors in design and implementation of Summer Camp Program.

  7. Schedules and monitors time off for staff.

  8. Provides and communicates schedules as needed for kitchen, office, and staff.

  9. Attends staff meetings and trainings.

  10. Provides verbal and written evaluations for staff as assigned.

  11. Attends and facilitates Director's meeting.

  12. Facilitates parent phone calls and arrangements for campers who are being sent home. Informs office of all camper cabin changes and camper departures.

  13. Other duties as assigned.


  1. Must be 21 years old.

  2. Current certifications in CPR, First Aid and Lifeguard with documentation available upon Hiring/arrival.

  3. Must have 2 years camping experience or equivalent.

  4. High school graduate or equivalent.

  5. One or more years of college preferred. Other applicable education, training, and experience, which provide the knowledge, abilities, and skills necessary to perform effectively in the position will be considered.

  6. Ability to participate in activities that involve rigorous activity in an outdoor setting, including, but not limited to hiking, boating, camping and swimming.

  7. Prefer knowledge of, and previous experience with, diverse populations (language, culture, race, physical ability, sexual orientation, etc.). Ability to speak any language in addition to English may be helpful.
