More about the position:

Riding Instructors teach riding lessons, facilitate trail rides, and lead equine workshops for the Horsemasters and Horsemaster Leadership programs. Riding Instructors care for the 30+ horses that live on camp property during the summer, teach beginner, intermediate, and advanced riding lessons to campers in grades 6-11, and facilitate ground lessons for horse breeds, colors, and anatomy. Riding Instructors will also facilitate trail rides and riding lessons for families during family camp weekends which occur during staff training and at the end of the summer season. Previous experience riding horses, caring for horses, and teaching beginner lessons is required. All Riding Instructors live in Horsemaster Village with Horsemasters campers and Cabin Counselors, fulfilling the role of a Cabin Counselor when not working in their assigned program area.

  1. Supervises and instruct a group of campers. Ensuring that all camper are accounted for and safe at all times.

  2. Assist in supervising a chore routine that cares for horses and equipment with help from campers. Such as daily feeding, watering, cleaning of horses and barn facilities and pasture area.

  3. Lead and assist in program activities that are developmentally appropriate and which promote camper skill and character development, e.g. trail rides.

  4. Ensure campers are exposed to various responsibilities with the horses, e.g. feeding, watering, grooming.

  5. Demonstrate and teach riding techniques, e.g. saddling, bridling, etc.

  6. Maintains safety and cleanliness standards. Takes special note of individual camper/staff health needs or concerns on a daily basis. Shares cleaning duties with fellow staff.

  7. Communicates personal or camper/staff needs to Riding Director in a timely manner.

  8. Maintains equipment in sound and safe order.

  9. Attends staff meeting and trainings.

  10. Follows YMCA policies and procedures, including those related to medical and disciplinary situations, child abuse prevention and emergencies.


  1. 18 years of age or older.

  2. Current state approved first aid certification.

    1. Current state approved CPR certification.
    1. High school graduate or equivalent.
  1. One or more years of college preferred.

  2. 3 years horse riding experience.

  3. Knowledge of horses, riding methods/techniques, basic animal husbandry, tack as well as instruction.

  4. Ability to build positive relationships with campers and staff.

  5. Promote and maintain a safe and positive environment for campers.

  6. Demonstrate leadership skills.

  7. Must be able to work independently, exercise good judgment and demonstrate organizational skills.

  8. Provide enthusiasm, creativity, resourcefulness and good problem solving skills.

  9. Possess outdoor living and adventure skills.

  10. Oversee and implement a variety of program activities.

  11. Ability to work effectively with culturally diverse camper and staff population.

  12. Ability to participate in activities that involve rigorous physical activity in an outdoor setting, including, but not limited to hiking, boating, camping, swimming, etc.

  13. The Horsemaster Riding Staff will put in extra physical work in caring for the horses.

  • Within 14 days of assuming camp duties.
