The deckhand supports our boat captain and helps ferry Camp Orkila participants to offsite overnight island trips. The deckhand will assist with loading and unloading pariticpants, ensuring safe handling and operation of the 44-passenger Kwhanice motor vessel, and perform a variety of other duties as assigned.

Responsibilities

PRINCIPAL ACTIVITIES

  1. Assists in maintaining the water vessels

  2. Ensures the supervision and safety of campers at all times.

  3. Maintain Safety equipment (lifejackets, rescue boats, first aid kits, etc.)

  4. Ensure proper maintenance of small craft and larger vessels.

  5. Ensure that passengers know and follow safe boating practices.

  6. Assist Boat Captain in landing, docking and departing from various docks; using lines, moorings, and a dinghy with a small outward motor.

  7. Serve as sole lifeguard on duty for all passengers and crew.

  8. Operate a row boat.

  9. Communicates personal or staff needs to Boat Captain or Summer Camp Director in a timely manner.

  10. Attends staff meetings and trainings.

  11. Follows YMCA policies and procedures, including those related to medical and disciplinary situations, child abuse prevention and emergencies.

  12. Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

  1. 18 years of age or older.

  2. Current lifeguard certification required.

  3. Current state approved first aid certification.

  4. Current state approved CPR certification.

  5. High school graduate or equivalent.

  6. One or more years of college preferred.

  7. Must be able to pass drug test.

Ability to participate in activities that involve rigorous activity in an outdoor setting, including, but not limited to hiking, boating, camping and swimming.
