More about the position:
Arts and Earth (A&E) staff facilitate our arts studio, earth sciences programs, and our Marine Salmon Center! This includes art projects, visiting our salt water touch tank, “Life in the Forest” (an energetic tag game), archery and riflery (BBs), beach walks, and tactile activies like rope bridge and geodome. Program Counselors live in cabins with Cabin Counselors and campers, serving as a counselor when not working in their assigned program area. A&E program counselors perform other duties as assigned and are led by the Arts and Earth Unit Director.
Supervises a group of ten campers. Ensures that all campers are accounted for and safe at all times.
Develops lesson plans, teaches, and facilitates arts and crafts, marine and earth sciences programs.
Facilitates program activities that are developmentally appropriate and which promote camper skill and character development, e.g. cabin activities, values sessions. Leads and assists with facilitation of all-camp special events.
Provides leadership and supervision to any developing leaders placed with the cabin: OSIs, CIT's and/or LDI's.
Maintains safety and cleanliness standards. Takes special note of individual camper health needs or concerns on a daily basis. Shares cleaning duties with fellow staff.
Communicates personal or camper needs to Unit Director in a timely manner.
Maintains equipment in sound and safe order.
Attends staff meetings and trainings.
Follows YMCA policies and procedures, including those related to medical and disciplinary situations, child abuse prevention and emergencies.
Ability to build positive relationships with campers and staff.
Promote and maintain a safe and positive environment for campers.
Demonstrate leadership skills. Must be able to work independently, exercise good judgment and demonstrate organizational skills.
Provide enthusiasm, creativity, resourcefulness and good problem solving skills.
Possess outdoor living and adventure skills.
Oversee and implement a variety of program activities.
Ability to work effectively with culturally diverse camper and staff population.
Ability to participate in activities that involve rigorous physical activity in an outdoor setting, including, but not limited to hiking, boating, camping, swimming, etc.
18 years of age or older.
Current state approved first aid certification.
- Current state approved CPR certification.
- High school graduate or equivalent.
- One or more years of college preferred.
- Within 14 days of assuming camp duties.
