Overview

Job Summary

Engages with members and provides a welcoming environment. Has a general understanding of fitness equipment and basic Y principles. Instructs individual or group wellness, fitness, trainings and/or related classes. Acts as a liaison and advocate for YMCA. Understands the Health Seeker target market and provides motivational coaching to members participating in ongoing YMCA programs.

Responsibilities

  1. Observes and discusses individual progress with participants.

  2. Develops positive relationships with participants and facilitates relationships among participants and members. Provides motivational support and guidance.

  3. Increases participant awareness of all healthy lifestyle factors.

  4. Encourages member involvement and identifies potential volunteers.

  5. Reports equipment problems.

  6. Maintains clean and safe environment for members and participants in Fitness Center and other branch spaces.

  7. Attends staff meetings and approved trainings as required.

  8. Ensures safe and effective workouts. Responds to, and reports, accidents and incidents.

  9. Conveys basic information on Y Total Health/Activate America.

  10. Tracks, monitors, evaluates and transitions assigned Total Health participants providing motivational support.

  11. Accurately maintains related records.

  12. May lead Personalized Wellness Plans and/or Youth Fitness.

  13. May lead one or more ongoing Y Total Health programs such as Y Personal Fitness, Lose to Win, ACT!,

Qualifications

  1. Current state approved first aid certification.

  2. Current state approved CPR certification.

  3. High school education or equivalent preferred.

  4. Two or more years’ experience teaching or practicing healthy living may be helpful.

  5. Ability to lead a class or provide individual service.

  6. Ability to respond to safety and emergency situations.

  7. Ability to motivate and educate members.

  8. Ability to set up, move and store equipment.

  9. Prefer knowledge of, and previous experience with, diverse populations (language, culture, race, physical ability, sexual orientation, etc.). Ability to speak any language in addition to English may be helpful.

  10. Personal Trainer: Nationally recognized certification such as YMCA Fitness Specialist Trainer, YMCA Fitness Testing and Assessment Specialist Trainer, ACSM, ACE, NSCA. May be helpful.

  • Within 30 days of employment or at first available training.
